COLLEGE ROUNDUP : SCC Beats Point Loma, 87-57; Winning Streak Reaches Seven

Mike Henjum had 20 points, Terry Scruggs had 18 and John Mounce 16 as Southern California College defeated Point Loma Nazarene, 87-57, in a Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Tuesday at Point Loma.

It was the seventh consecutive victory for the Vanguards (17-7, 6-2).

In nonconference baseball:

US International 4, UC Irvine 1--Visiting US International scored three runs in the third inning for a 3-1 lead. Shortstop Al Rodriguez went two for three and Craig Plumley went two for three with a run batted in for UC Irvine (2-2).

Grand Canyon 13, Chapman 8--Tim Florez went two for two with three RBIs and three runs scored to lead host Grand Canyon (4-4). Jody Garcia went three for four with two RBIs and Doug Yates went two for five with three RBIs and a run scored for Chapman (3-3).

UC San Diego 9, Christ College Irvine 4--Keith Laszlo went three for five and scored a run for visiting Christ College Irvine (2-1).

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

Nevada Las Vegas 82, Cal State Fullerton 45--Jill Matyuch scored 19 points for the Titans (10-11, 5-7) at Nevada Las Vegas.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Point Loma Nazarene 78, Southern California College 68--Stacey Mounce had 18 points and Jennifer Hardigan and Kristen Bevis each had 11 for Southern California College (11-11, 3-3). Shannon Abrams had 22 points, Camille Armijo had 20 points and Alicia Haristey 16 for host Point Loma Nazarene (12-10, 2-4).

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Southern California College 6, Caltech 3--Caltech won the teams’ first meeting this season, 7-2, but SCC won this one at Caltech. Finn Bell, Dave Christensen, Dave Wyckoff, Scott Siler each won singles matches and the doubles teams of Mark Merrick and Christensen and Wyckoff and Siler also won for SCC (1-2). Caltech is 2-1.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Cal State Fullerton 9, Point Loma Nazarene 0--Caroline Sporer defeated Kim Wright, 6-3, 6-2, for host Cal State Fullerton (3-4).
