Nominations closed Tuesday for mayor and council seats in eight San Gabriel Valley cities, with more than 50 candidates filing to run in the April 10 elections.

The original filing deadline was extended five days because at least one incumbent in each city decided not to seek reelection. Nominations in 16 other San Gabriel Valley cities closed last week.

In Diamond Bar, the decision by Gary Miller to give up his council seat to run for the state Senate helped attract a large field of nine candidates for the council race.

Other council members who did not seek new terms are Jeff Marrone in El Monte, Leonard Martyns in Glendora, Christopher Houseman in Monterey Park, Robert Bacon in West Covina, Lisa Fowler and Bruce Crow in Sierra Madre, Maria Tortorelli in San Dimas and Samuel Knowles in South Pasadena.

In San Dimas, Mayor Terry Dipple was virtually assured of reelection when no one filed to oppose him, but seven candidates did file for the two seats at stake on the City Council.
