R.P.V. Should Be Semirural Area

Al Billings (Times, Letters to the Editor, Feb. 2) does not appear to be familiar with the Rancho Palos Verdes budget, nor with the projections for future revenue and expenses which were prepared by Rancho Palos Verdes’ former finance director, Kevin Smith.

Basically, with one hotel of about 450 rooms, Rancho Palos Verdes will have more than enough money to cover all the anticipated costs such as additional police, fire, administration, roads, etc., and still have a surplus in 1997.

There is no financial reason for the city of Rancho Palos Verdes to encourage the overdevelopment of the coastline with additional hotels, golf courses, high-density condos, etc.

The General Plan requires that Rancho Palos Verdes maintain a semirural environment. A semirural environment with low traffic density is the reason why most of us came here in the first place. Save Our Coastline was organized and Rancho Palos Verdes was formed for the purpose of preserving our environment and life styles.

While overdevelopment will increase tax revenues, it will also greatly increase traffic, increase the potential for crime, greatly increase operating and capital costs, and will run counter to the reason for the formation of Rancho Palos Verdes.
