Six people, including Los Angeles City Councilman Robert Farrell and former community colleges Trustee Marguerite Archie-Hudson, filed papers by Wednesday declaring their intent to run for the state Assembly seat held since 1976 by Democrat Maxine Waters.
Waters announced recently that she will give up the 48th Assembly post to run for Congress. She hopes to succeed retiring U.S. Rep. Augustus Hawkins (D-Los Angeles).
Filing to replace Waters were Farrell, who has represented the city’s 8th District since 1974; Archie-Hudson, who served on the board of the Los Angeles Community College District for eight years before being defeated in 1987; Lynwood City Councilwoman Evelyn Wells; governmental affairs consultant Roderick Wright; Marcine Shaw and Don Graham, both of Los Angeles. All are Democrats. The filing period concludes next Tuesday.
The 48th District covers a swath of Los Angeles County that includes Watts, South-Central Los Angeles and the South Gate area.
