COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : No. 1 Missouri Shoots Only 29% in Losing to Kansas State, 65-58

Missouri shot only 29% and lost to a fired-up Kansas State team, 65-58, Thursday night at Manhattan, Kan.

The No. 1 Tigers (21-2, 7-1 in Big Eight Conference play) had won four in a row since wresting the top ranking from Kansas. They held an eight-point second-half lead when Jean Derouillere and Steve Henson triggered a decisive 18-2 run for Kansas State (13-12, 3-4).

Henson, who missed all six shots in the first half, scored six points in the winning spurt, including a three-point basket that put the Wildcats ahead, 50-49, with 5:35 remaining. Derouillere had eight of the 18 points.

Derouillere led the Wildcats with 24 points, and Henson had 18, all in the second half.

Anthony Peeler, who was eight of eight from the free-throw line, led the Tigers with 18 points.

Missouri was held 32 points below its season average while seeing its 12-game winning streak broken. It was the Tigers’ lowest point total since January, 1986.

Virginia 72, No. 4 Duke 69--Bryant Stith had 23 points and 15 rebounds, and the Cavaliers ended nearly seven years of frustration against the Blue Devils in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Charlottesville, Va.

Virginia, which had lost 16 consecutive games to Duke dating to the 1983 ACC tournament, improved to 14-6 and 3-5.

Duke (18-4, 7-2) saw its six-game winning streak end.

The Blue Devils trailed, 33-27, after a first half in which they shot 30% from the floor. They had nine turnovers, 14 fouls and repeatedly allowed Virginia to score on layups.

Alaa Abdelnaby led Duke with 16 points.

No. 7 Michigan 79, No. 25 Indiana 71--Loy Vaught led a balanced scoring attack with 19 points to lead the Wolverines (17-4, 7-3) in a Big Ten Conference game at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Michigan had lost three consecutive games to Indiana (14-6, 4-6). Earlier this season, the Wolverines blew a 20-point first-half lead and lost to the Hoosiers, 69-67.

No. 12 Illinois 99, No. 17 Minnesota 72--Marcus Liberty scored a career-high 33 points and Kendall Gill added 26 to lead the Illini in a Big Ten game at Champaign, Ill.

Illinois (17-4, 7-4) held a 44-36 halftime lead and blew the game open with a 12-2 run to start the second half. The Gophers are 15-5 and 6-4.

No. 14 La Salle 78, Fairfield 51--Doug Overton scored 24 points and Lionel Simmons had 22 points, six blocked shots and three assists in leading the Explorers (18-1, 9-0) in a Metro Atlantic Conference game at Fairfield, Conn.

No. 15 Louisville 95, South Carolina 77--The Gamecocks shot 71% in the first half of a Metro Conference game at Louisville, but still trailed by 11 points.

South Carolina’s problem was 14 first-half turnovers that resulted in 19 Louisville (18-4, 8-1) points.

South Carolina (10-9, 4-4) shot 51% in the second half.

Senior guard Eric Sykes scored 22 of his career-high 30 points in the first half.

Jerome Harmon led Louisville with 19 points.

No. 21 Xavier (Ohio) 83, Marquette 78--Jamal Walker scored 14 of his 22 points in the final five minutes to rally the Musketeers (19-2, 8-1) from a four-point deficit in a Midwestern Collegiate game at Cincinnati.

Tyrone Hill led Xavier with 26 points.

Tony Smith had 31 points for Marquette (11-8, 5-3).

Michigan St. 60, Wisconsin 57--Kirk Manns scored 19 points, including a key basket with 18 seconds to go, to help the Spartans (18-5, 7-3) hold off the Badgers (11-12, 2-9) in a Big Ten game at East Lansing, Mich.

Ohio State 98, Iowa 80--Jim Jackson scored 19 points to lead the Buckeyes (11-9, 5-5) over the error-prone Hawkeyes (11-9, 3-7) in a Big Ten game at Columbus, Ohio.

Notre Dame 63, SMU 49--The Irish used a full-court press to beat the Mustangs at Dallas and improve to 12-7.

LaPhonso Ellis led Notre Dame with 16 points. SMU is 7-13.

San Diego 73, Gonzaga 65--Pat Holbert scored a career-high 22 points as the Toreros (11-10, 6-3) won a West Coast Conference game at Spokane. Jim McPhee had 29 points for the Gaels (11-10, 5-3). San Diego made 15 of 16 free throws down the stretch.
