A San Diego man was shot to death Friday by an unknown assailant, San Diego police said.

Lt. Gary Learn said officers responded to a car fire in the 3500 block of Fairmount Avenue about 11:15 a.m. When they arrived, they found that the driver had been shot.

David Otto Munster, 27, was pronounced dead at Villa View Community Hospital at 11:45 a.m.

Witnesses told police that Munster was parked in a small shopping center about a block away, at Myrtle and Fairmount avenues. He was seen in the car, talking to a man standing beside the car, Learn said. Suddenly, the man pulled out a gun and fired at Munster. The gunman ran into an alley, and Munster drove out of the lot, then north on Fairmount about one block, where his car crashed into a parked car, Learn said.

Learn said the car’s wheels continued to turn, resulting in friction that caused the fire.

Police have no suspects and know of no motive, Learn said.
