TENNIS ROUNDUP : McEnroe Wins, Faces Mayotte in Semifinals
Second-seeded John McEnroe defeated unseeded West German Eric Jelen, 6-3, 6-3, in a quarterfinal match at the Milan indoor tournament Friday night, setting up an all-American semifinal with Tim Mayotte.
Mayotte, seeded fifth, beat Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, 7-5, 6-7 (2-7), 7-5.
Top-seeded Ivan Lendl beat Jim Courier, 6-2, 6-4, and plays Pete Sempras today. Sampras defeated Milan Srejber of Czechoslovakia, 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 6-4.
McEnroe, ranked sixth in the world, was never in danger against Jelen. He lost his serve twice in the first set, but broke three times, then added three more service breaks in the second set.
Second-seeded Andre Agassi defused the power-serving No. 8 seed Paul Annacone, 6-4, 6-2, to gain the semifinals of a $250,000 tournament in San Francisco.
Also advancing to the semifinals were No. 5 seeded Jim Grabb and unseeded Todd Witsken and Joey Rive.
