San Diego police killed one man and wounded another Friday night in unrelated shooting incidents, one downtown and one in Southeast San Diego, police spokesman Dave Cohen said.

The first shooting occurred at 7:56 p.m. after an apparent purse snatching on 12th Avenue between Market Street and Island Avenue, Cohen said. Officer John Cain, who was in the area, saw a man run toward him with a light-colored bag in one hand and what looked like a gun in the other, Cohen said.

Cain demanded the man stop and drop the weapon, but he did not and Cain fired “several times,” hitting him, Cohen said.

The man, an unidentified Latino male about 30, was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Cohen said.

Officers found a purse where the man fell as well as a “small gun,” though they had not determined whether the gun was real, Cohen said Saturday.

The second shooting, at 10:56 p.m. Friday, occurred after Officers Arthur Dubois and Alphonso Dobynes drove by a fight at 43rd and Gamma streets, Cohen said.

Ralph Contreras was slashing at Ignacio Marron with a knife after trying moments earlier to rob him, officers said.

The two officers tried to stop the fight and Contreras turned toward Dobynes, Cohen said. Believing his partner was in danger, Dubois fired, hitting Contreras in the back, Cohen said.

Contreras was in stable condition Saturday at UC San Diego Medical Center, a hospital official said.

Marron was treated and released Saturday morning from Paradise Valley Hospital, a nursing supervisor said.
