COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Walker’s 3-Point Basket Shocks Syracuse

Chris Walker had a two-point basket on his mind, settled for a three-point shot and wound up stunning No. 4-ranked Syracuse.

Walker scored his three-point basket with 1:11 to play, then added a free throw with 12.2 seconds to go to nail down Villanova’s 60-56 Big East Conference shocker Monday at Philadelphia.

The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for Syracuse (18-4, 8-4).

Woodard added 14 points for Villanova (14-12, 6-7). Derrick Coleman led Syracuse with 18, Billy Owens added 17 and Stephen Thompson 13.

No. 7 UNLV 69, Fresno St. 64--The Runnin’ Rebels had three injured players and one out with chicken pox but still managed to gain the Big West victory at Las Vegas.

UNLV starting guard Greg Anthony was carried from the court with a broken jaw with 13:41 remaining in the first half after crashing to the floor while driving for the basket. David Butler sprained a knee and reserve guard Stacey Cvijanovich suffered a separated shoulder. Reserve guard Travis Bice was sidelined for 10 days earlier Monday with the chicken pox. It was not known how long the injured players would be out, if at all.

Butler still had 22 points and Larry Johnson led the team with 23 as Las Vegas (20-4, 12-1), rallied after trailing most of the first half.

Tod Bernard had 16 points and Wilbert Hooker and Dave Barnett 13 each for Fresno State (9-12, 4-8).

No. 6 Duke 102, Stetson 67--Alaa Abdelnaby scored 18 points and Christian Laettner added 17 at Orlando, Fla., as the Blue Devils reached the 20-victory mark for the seventh consecutive season.

Stetson (9-15) led by four midway through the first half but trailed, 44-37, at the intermission. Duke (20-4) took control early in the second half, despite the loss of leading scorer Phil Henderson, who sprained his left ankle in the first half and may be out for as long as a week.

No. 14 LaSalle 93, St. Joseph’s 76--Lionel Simmons moved into seventh place on the all-time NCAA scoring list despite a season-low 12 points, but Doug Overton scored 26, reserve Bobby Johnson added a season-high 24 and the Explorers rallied to win at Philadelphia.

St. Joseph’s (5-17) led 59-52 with 11:48 left and 65-63 with 6:41 to go. La Salle (20-1) then went on a 20-2 run.

No. 21 Michigan State 80, Iowa 70--Kirk Manns tied his own Big Ten record of eight three-point baskets and scored 30 points at Iowa City as the Spartans (20-5, 9-3) won their fourth game in a row.

Mike Peplowski added 12 points for the Spartans. Iowa (11-11, 3-9) was led by James Moses with 18.

Clemson 89, N. Carolina St. 81--Dale Davis scored 28 points and grabbed 18 rebounds as the Tigers won an Atlantic Coast Conference game at home.

Clemson (19-5, 7-3) rallied from a 15-point first-half deficit to beat the Wolfpack (17-7, 5-4).

Kentucky 78, Florida 74--Reggie Hanson scored 14 second-half points and Sean Woods delivered a key three-point play and two free throws in the final two minutes to seal the Wildcats’ victory at Gainesville, Fla.

The triumph was the third straight for Kentucky (11-10, 8-5 SEC). Florida shot 56% but still lost its ninth in a row.

DePaul 66, Miami 49--David Booth scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half at Miami as the Blue Demons (14-11) won on the road for just the fourth time in 12 games. Joe Wylie led Miami (8-12) with 17 points.
