Superior Court Judge Peter Riddle on Tuesday appointed an independent expert to advise the court about whether the two minor children of slain attorney Daniel T. Broderick III should have any contact with their mother, who is accused of killing him.

In appointing Dr. Yanon Volcani, a San Diego clinical psychologist, Riddle said he wanted the expert’s investigation to be broad, including interviews with the two boys and their mother, Elisabeth A. Broderick, who has pleaded not guilty to charges that she murdered her ex-husband and his new young wife.

“I’ll look for advice from the expert on all matters,” Riddle said, including who will be appointed the permanent guardian of the boys, ages 13 and 11.
