COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Witmer Sparks SCC Past Fresno Pacific

Guard Rick Witmer scored 27 points to lead Southern California College to an 89-77 victory over Fresno Pacific College in a Golden State Athletic Conference game Tuesday at SCC.

Center Jeff Bickmore added 21 points and 12 rebounds for SCC (20-7, 8-2). Guard Donnie Johnson scored 24 points and center Rich Kamminga had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Fresno Pacific (17-10, 6-3).

SCC, a game behind conference leader Westmont College, led, 44-34, at halftime and was never seriously challenged in the second half.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Pepperdine 6, UC Irvine 3--Visiting Pepperdine, the 16th-ranked team in the nation, won five of seven three-set matches to defeat Irvine. It was the second consecutive loss for the ninth-ranked Anteaters.

“We were up several matches and we just let them go,” Irvine Coach Greg Patton said.

After winning the first set of his match against Howard Joffee, Irvine’s No. 2 singles player Shige Kanroji led the second, 4-0, before eventually losing, 6-7, 6-4, 7-5. At No. 1 singles, the Waves’ David Wells-Roth defeated Trevor Kronemann, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2.

Richard Lubner and Mike Roberts, in singles, and the team of Lubner and Aaron Stolpman , in doubles, were the only winners for Irvine (2-2). Pepperdine is 5-1.

In nonconference baseball:

Cal State Fullerton 10, United States International 3--Mate Borgogno had three hits, two sacrifice flies and drove in three runs to lead host Cal State Fullerton (4-4).

Paul Bunch had three hits and an RBI and Kevin Farlow had two hits, including a three-run home run in the fifth inning, for Fullerton, which had a season-high 17 hits.

Sam Colarusso (2-1) pitched the first six innings and Steve Watson pitched the final three for his first save. USIU is 3-5.

UCLA 13, UC Irvine 10--The visiting Bruins scored three runs in the eighth inning, two unearned, to take an 11-10 lead and scored two more in the ninth. Trailing 3-0, the Anteaters scored six runs in the fifth, when Fred Combs hit a three-run homer. Paul Ellis then hit his second home run of the game, a three-run homer, in the top of the sixth for UCLA as the Bruins scored five to take an 8-6 lead. The Anteaters scored three in the bottom of the inning and scored another in the seventh before the Bruins rallied.

Chris Pritchett went four-for-five and Mike Hankins went three-for-four for the Bruins (9-1).

For the Anteaters (2-6), Al Rodriguez went two-for-three with three RBIs and Chris Gallego was two-for-five with four RBIs.

In women’s intercollegiate tennis:

Cal State Fullerton 6, Orange Coast College 2--The Titans’ Caroline Sporer defeated Gina Garcia, the No. 1 community college player in the state, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, in the match at Fullerton.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Fresno Pacific 68, Southern California College 50--Lori Halliday scored 14 points to lead SCC (11-13, 3-5). Anita Lutz had 17 points to lead Frenso Pacific (13-11, 6-2) at SCC.
