Whittier College Cafeteria Blaze Forces Students to Dine Alfresco

Share

About 500 students at Whittier College found themselves eating meals on the grassy campus lawn and in the faculty lounge this week after a blaze late Sunday night destroyed the campus cafeteria.

College officials were expected to hire a catering service to set up a temporary cafeteria on a corner of the campus. In the meantime, college cooks have been using an outdoor barbecue to prepare food for the students.

Sandra Sarr, a spokeswoman for the college, said fire investigators determined that the blaze, which caused about $500,000 damage, was sparked by an electrical short in a kitchen refrigerator.
