Six people were killed Wednesday in Srinagar, summer capital of India’s Jammu and Kashmir state, in clashes between Muslim militants and security forces, officials said.

They said paramilitary troops opened fire, killing five people, after a militant tried to snatch a rifle from them in the Amirakadal business area. They did not say if the victims were militants. The sixth person killed was a passer-by caught in cross-fire elsewhere.

More than 100 people have been killed in Kashmir since January when Indian troops cracked down on Muslim militants campaigning for independence or a merger with Pakistan.
