Chargers Hall, Grossman Named to Rookie Team

Center Courtney Hall and defensive end Burt Grossman of the Chargers were named Thursday to the Pro Football Writers of America all-rookie team. Detroit’s Barry Sanders, the NFL’s second-leading rusher last season, was named rookie of the year.

Al Luginbill, San Diego State football coach, officially announced that Steve Fairchild has been named recruiting coordinator.

Fairchild, 31, spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of New Mexico. He was an assistant coach at SDSU in 1986. He replaces Steve Devine, who left for Ohio University after a season as SDSU’s offensive line coach.

MEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State stayed close in a few matches but lost, 8-1, at No. 4 Stanford.

SDSU got its only victory in No. 3 doubles, where Jeff Pelloli and Dax Peterson defeated Dan Turbow and Eric Peus, 6-4, 6-2.

In No. 1 singles, Stanford’s Jonathon Stark, No. 5 in the nation, defeated Ricardo Herrera, 6-3, 7-5.

San Diego State fell to 5-3. Stanford improved to 4-0.

UC San Diego upset Cal State Bakersfield (ranked 15th in Division II), 6-3, for its first victory. UCSD (1-3), a Division III school, lost at No. 1 singles, but No. 2 Sig Huber, No. 3 Chris Beloli, No. 4 Steve Stukovsky and No. 6 Jeff Beathard all won.

Then both the No. 1 doubles team of Beloli and Huber and the No. 2 team of Francois Monar and Tim Ditzler won to clinch the match.

U.S. International fell to 5-4 after a 5-4 loss to visiting Chapman College, a Division II school. USIU’s Yoram Baron defeated Chapman’s Mike Zurcher, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 1 singles.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State defeated visiting Irvine, 9-0, to improve to 3-2.

The Aztecs’ No. 1 singles player, Eva Oliveras, defeated Stacey Cadigan, 6-2, 6-4, and No. 2 Michelle Apras beat Ali Yoshimoto, 6-2, 6-1.

The No. 1 doubles team of Dorrie Brandt and Nicole Storto beat Cadigan and Melissa Vaccaro, 6-1, 6-2.
