COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Defeats Pepperdine

Fred Combs doubled in two runs in the first inning and UC Irvine scored two unearned runs in the sixth as the Anteaters defeated Pepperdine, 4-2, in a nonconference baseball game Monday at Irvine.
Ken Whitworth (2-1) pitched eight innings, allowing eight hits. He struck out six and walked four. Mike Rood earned his second save for the Anteaters (5-6).
In another nonconference baseball game:
Chapman 7, Southern California College 4--Doug Yates and Jody Garcia each hit two-run home runs and Jason Rolish hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning for Chapman (6-5) at Hart Park in Orange.
In nonconference softball:
Chapman 2-3, Cal State Sacramento 3-0--Sandy Olivas had three runs batted in and Cheri Schreck (2-2) struck out seven as visiting Chapman won the second game of a doubleheader.
In nonconference men’s tennis:
Kentucky 5, UC Irvine 4--After leading 5-4 and 30-love in the third set, Irvine’s No. 1 doubles team of Trevor Kronemann and Shige Kanroji lost four consecutive points and eventually lost the tie-breaker, 7-2, as the Anteaters (4-3) lost to host Kentucky (6-1).
In Big West Conference women’s basketball:
Hawaii 97, UC Irvine 46--Hawaii’s Judy Mosley had 30 points and 13 rebounds as the Anteaters (1-23, 0-15 in the conference) lost their 20th consecutive game. Hawaii is 23-2, 14-2.
