COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : No. 16 Louisville Overpowered by Memphis State

From Associated Press

Louisville Coach Denny Crum had an uneasy feeling before Tuesday night’s game against Memphis State, and the feeling proved prophetic.

“Before the game, I felt we were not ready mentally, but there’s nothing to say to change that before a game,” Crum said after the Tigers defeated the 16th-ranked Cardinals, 82-68, in a Metro Conference game at Memphis, Tenn.

Memphis State outrebounded Louisville, 41-28, and the Tigers’ front line outscored Louisville’s big men, 55-42, led by Ernest Smith’s 18 points.

Although the Tigers led by as many as 11 with 2:20 left, Memphis State Coach Larry Finch kept waiting for Louisville to make a comeback.

“I wondered when Louisville would get that typical surge, but our youngsters were able to combat it,” Finch said. “I think our young big guys are playing better. They have matured.”

Memphis State is 16-9 and 7-5 in the conference. Louisville is 20-6 and 9-2.

No. 11 Syracuse 105, Boston College 69--Derrick Coleman scored 21 points and the Orangemen used an 11-1 run at the start of the second half in a Big East Conference game at Syracuse, N.Y.
