COUNTYWIDE : Sheriff Files Petition in Bid for 5th Term

Share

Orange County Sheriff Brad Gates submitted more than 2,700 signatures to the county registrar of voters office Thursday to qualify his bid for a fifth term in office.

Gates submitted the signatures in lieu of a $1,015 filing fee because he said it demonstrates his “broad-based, grass-roots support.”

“I am proud to serve the citizens of Orange County as the sheriff-coroner,” Gates said. “I have decided to seek reelection because there are still many challenges facing Orange County.

“I want the opportunity to continue our war on drugs, which has mobilized our entire community to significantly decrease the demand for drugs,” he said. “Jail overcrowding is another critical issue that needs to be resolved.”

No one has yet filed nomination papers to run against Gates, who has served 15 years as Orange County’s sheriff-coroner. The filing deadline for the election is March 9.
