THE SIDELINES : U.S. Navy Boxer Collapses, Dies
A 23-year-old member of the U.S. Navy boxing team died Thursday at Memorial Hospital after collapsing during a Wednesday morning workout.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Tyrone Smith was pronounced dead at 11:06 a.m. after surgery to remove a large blood clot, according to El Paso County Deputy Coroner Dr. Michael Stewart.
Smith collapsed at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Ft. Carson boxing gymnasium where the Navy team was training for next week’s USA-Amateur Boxing Federation National Championships in Colorado Springs. Medics attempted unsuccessfully to revive Smith. He was taken to Memorial Hospital and underwent emergency surgery.
The 147-pound boxer was stationed at Norfolk (Va.) Naval Station. He would have been making his first appearance in the USA-ABF Championships.
