PACIFIC 10 ROUNDUP : Muehlebach’s 22 Points Help Lead Arizona, 80-61

Matt Muehlebach scored 22 points, including eight consecutive points to start the second half, to lead Arizona over Stanford, 80-61, in a Pacific 10 Conference basketball game at Stanford Friday.

Muehlebach’s spurt sparked a 16-3 run that the Wildcats used to take a 54-31 lead with 15 minutes left in the game. Arizona (18-5, 12-3 in the conference) never was challenged again as it controlled the game with its man-to-man defense and height advantage.

The closest Stanford (15-9, 7-8) came in the second half was 75-59 with 3:17 left.

Arizona used a 15-2 run in the first half to break a 21-21 tie. Arizona led, 38-28, at halftime.

Stanford was led by Adam Keefe, with 23 points and seven rebounds. Only one other Cardinal player, Kenny Ammann, scored in double figures, with 10 points.

Arizona’s Jud Buechler scored 16 points and four other Wildcats scored in double figures.

California 69, Arizona State 60--Roy Fisher had 24 points and nine rebounds and Brian Hendrick added 14 points and nine rebounds to lead the Bears at Berkeley.

Cal point guard Keith Smith added 11 points and nine assists, his fifth assist breaking Kevin Johnson’s school record of 521.

Despite a 9-0 burst to start the game and a 12-2 run at the start of the second half, the Bears (20-7, 11-5) could not put away the Sun Devils (12-12, 5-10), who were led by Issac Austin’s 14 points. Austin’s brother, Alex, added 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
