Women Begin Play Monday

INDIAN WELLS — Second-ranked Martina Navratilova and 17-year-old Conchita Martinez of Spain are the top two seeded players in the $350,000 Virginia Slims of Indian Wells, which begins Monday at Hyatt Grand Champions.
Navratilova, Martinez and the next six seeded players received first-round byes.
In that group are fourth-seeded Jana Novotna and sixth-seeded Hana Mandlikova, who also share a new coach. Betty Stove is coaching on an intermim basis.
Mandlikova parted ways with Mike Estep, her coach of 13 months, after the Australian Open, where she lost in the third round to 16-year-old Angelica Gavaldon, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1.
