H.R. (Bum) Bright, former owner of the Dallas Cowboys, says he wanted to fire Tom Landry as coach in 1987, but couldn’t talk then-General Manager Tex Schramm into doing it.

When Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys from Bright a year ago, Jones fired Landry and brought in his friend Jimmy Johnson, former coach at the University of Miami. Jones continues to receive criticism in the wake of the Cowboys’ 1-15 season.

“If I had known there would have been this much heat over Tom, I’d have taken it myself,” Bright told the Dallas Morning News. “I know that Jerry doesn’t deserve all this stuff.”
