COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Stuart Pitches Orange Coast Past Cypress

John Stuart allowed six hits and pitched a complete game to lead Orange Coast College to a 5-4 victory over Cypress in an Orange Empire Conference baseball game Tuesday at OCC.

Stuart allowed four hits and four runs, three earned, in the first inning, then permitted two walks and two hits in the next eight innings.

OCC scored three times in its half of the first, including a two-run single by Rod McCall. The Pirates then tied it, 4-4, in the fourth. Tony Spaan scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to give OCC a 5-4 lead. Spaan had four hits for OCC (8-6, 1-1). Cypress is 11-4, 0-1.

In other Orange Empire Conference games:

Rancho Santiago 2, Riverside 0--Rob Ney pitched 8 2/3 innings, allowed three hits and struck out six at Rancho Santiago (12-2, 2-0). Scott McGorgary got the final out on a strikeout.

Golden West 14, Saddleback 4--Gerad Cawhorn had two doubles and four RBIs and Frank Herman had three hits and an RBI for visiting Golden West.

Josh Bammer hit a two-run home run and Garry Christopherson hit a solo home run for Golden West (9-2, 1-1). Saddleback is 5-5, 0-2.

In a nonconference game:

Fullerton 4, Mt. San Antonio 1--Tom Kelly (3-0) had seven strikeouts in five innings for visiting Fullerton (10-2).

In the Orange Empire Conference men’s tennis:

Saddleback 9, Rancho Santiago 0--Arlen Sternberg won, 6-4, 6-1, and Brad Mosley won, 6-0, 6-0, in singles and Scott Clark and Eimei Ishida won, 6-1, 6-1, in doubles for visiting Saddleback (6-0, 1-0).

Cypress 7, Fullerton 2--John Swaino won, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, and Bob Carlton won, 7-6, 1-6, 6-3, for visiting Cypress (3-3, 1-0).

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Orange Coast 9, Cerritos 0--Ilkyung Choi won in singles, 6-0, 6-0 then teamed with Daven Moore at doubles to win, 7-5, 6-1, for host OCC (4-0).
