ST. LOUIS — A Trans World Airlines jet en route to John Wayne Airport with 59 passengers aboard returned to St. Louis on Wednesday because a cockpit warning light indicated a possible engine problem, officials said.
There were no injuries reported, and the plane landed safely.
Flight 65 took off from Lambert-St. Louis International Airport en route to Orange County at 9:35 a.m. The warning light came on in the cockpit of the MD-80 about 15 minutes into the flight, said Jim Faulkner, a TWA spokesman.
The pilot shut off one of the plane’s engines as a precaution, turned the aircraft around and returned to Lambert, Faulkner said. No emergency was called, he added.
The passengers were put aboard another TWA flight to Los Angeles. TWA provided ground transportation for the passengers between Los Angeles and Orange County.
The Flight 65 aircraft was being inspected by TWA mechanics, Faulkner said. He said there was no preliminary indication of what had caused the warning light to turn on.
