The Cal State Fullerton men’s gymnastics program, which won three college division national championships in the 1970s and is currently ranked 13th in the nation, could be discontinued because of athletic department budget problems, Coach Dick Wolfe confirmed Wednesday.

The university’s Athletics Council is expected to announce plans today for next year’s budget, possibly including the discontinuation of as many as three of the school’s 17 sports. The budget would then be submitted for the approval of University President Jewel Plummer Cobb.

“I’ve been told there’s real serious financial problems and they’re seriously considering dropping programs,” Wolfe said. “Unfortunately, mine is right in there.”

Fullerton must maintain seven men’s sports and seven women’s sports to continue competing in the NCAA Division I. The program currently has nine men’s teams and eight women’s teams.

Although a faculty group recently raised questions about the finances of the football program, football is not among the sports that are being considered for discontinuation.
