Ron Adams, Fresno State basketball coach, has resigned with two weeks remaining in the season after being told his contract would not be renewed next year, Athletic Director Gary Cunningham said Wednesday.

“I’m very fond of Ron Adams and I don’t wish him any malice. I’ve been very supportive of the program, but when you sit in the seat where I sit, you have to make some decisions,” Cunningham said.

Adams, 42, has led the Bulldogs to a 42-69 record during his four years as head coach. He was an assistant coach at Fresno State for seven years before being named head coach in 1986, and previously was head coach at Fresno Pacific College and an assistant coach at both UC Santa Barbara and U.S. International University.

Cunningham said the search for a new head coach will begin immediately. The team will be led by the assistant coaches for the remaining two Big West Conference games and the Big West Conference tournament.
