TENNIS ROUNDUP : Stich Surprises Chesnokov as Upsets Continue in Memphis

The wave of upsets continued when Michael Stich of West Germany beat third-seeded Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union, 6-3, 6-1, Thursday night in the Volvo Indoor at Memphis, Tenn.

In another upset, Petr Korda of Czechoslovakia ousted No. 4 Kevin Curren, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.

Sixth-seeded Wally Masur of Australia is the highest-seeded player left in the tournament after he defeated Jean Fleurian of France, 6-7 (7-4), 6-1, 7-6 (8-6).

In other third-round matches, Danie Visser of South Africa beat No. 7 Marcelo Filippini of Uruguay, 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4; Veli Paloheimo defeated No. 10 Paul Chamberlin, 7-5, 6-1; Malivai Washington eliminated No. 12 Richey Reneberg 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3; Glenn Layendecker surprised No. 16 Darren Cahill, 6-4, 6-4, and Gary Muller of South Africa defeated No. 15 Jimmy Arias, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Defending champion Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland needed only an hour to defeat Nicolas Pereira of Uruguay, 6-2, 6-3, in the ABN World tournament at Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
