Jim Gallagher holed a bunker shot for an eagle that lifted him ahead of some of golf’s top names Thursday in the first round of the Doral Open golf tournament at Miami.

Gallagher made the most of relatively calm conditions and shot a seven-under par on Doral’s Blue Monster course.

Jack Nicklaus shot a 68, which left him in contention along with Greg Norman, Tom Kite and Paul Azinger.

Mike Hulbert is in second place with a 66.

Hale Irwin, Ben Crenshaw and Fred Couples, last week’s Los Angeles Open winner, were in a group at 67, two back of Gallagher.

Kristi Albers, Patty Sheehan and Mitzi Edge shot three-under-par 68s in heavy morning rain and stiff afternoon winds to share a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Women’s Kemper Open at Wailea, Hawaii.

The round began in a drizzle, which let up by mid-morning. It finished in sunshine.

Six golfers managed one-under 70s, while a large group shot par.
