TENNIS ROUNDUP : Stich Wins, Faces Muller in Memphis Semifinal
Michael Stich advanced to the semifinal round of the Volvo Indoor tennis tournament with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Malivai Washington Friday night at Memphis, Tenn.
Stich, ranked 80th in the world, eliminated Andrei Chesnokov, the tournament’s third-seeded player, in the third round. The West German will meet South Africa’s Gary Muller, a 7-5, 7-5 winner over Danie Visser, in today’s semifinals. Muller upset top-seeded Stefan Edberg in the second round.
In the other semifinal, Glenn Layendecker, who beat Finland’s Veli Paloheimo, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, in a three-hour marathon, will meet sixth-seeded Wally Masur of Australia, who beat No. 13 Petr Korda of Czechoslovakia, 6-4, 7-5.
Layendecker earlier upset No. 2 seeded Michael Chang.
Emilio Sanchez of Spain beat Pete Sampras, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, to improve to 2-0 in the round-robin Eagle tournament at Scottsdale, Ariz. Andre Agassi defeated Tim Mayotte, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, which gave both a 1-1 record.
Top-seeded Brad Gilbert defeated Amos Mansdorf of Israel, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6), and Michael Tauson of Denmark upset fifth-seeded Magnus Gustafsson of Sweden, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), to reach the semifinals of the ABN World tournament at Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
