COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Keeps Streak Alive

UC Irvine extended its winning streak to nine games by scoring a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat United States International University, 9-8, in a nonconference baseball game at UC Irvine Friday.

Irvine (11-6) led, 8-7, but USIU’s Beto Rodriguez tied the score with a home run to center field.

Osmar DeChavez scored for Irvine in the bottom of the inning by knocking over USIU catcher Mike Murphy and jarring the ball loose. DeChavez was at third when Billy Bardens flied to center.

DeChavez had three hits, two runs batted in and scored three runs.

USIU is 5-10-1.

In nonconference softball:

Chapman 10-2, Cal Baptist 0-0--Junior Jacki Blake pitched a no-hitter for Chapman (13-2) in the first game. Sandra Olivas had four hits, including two three-run home runs and two-run triple, in the first game. Cheri Schreck lost a perfect game with two outs in the seventh inning, and ended up with a one-hitter for Chapman in the second game.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Occidental 5, Southern California College 4--Visiting Occidental was led by Steve Hiltey, who defeated Scott Siler, 6-0, 6-0.

In women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 8, New Mexico State 1--Ali Yoshimoto defeated Vivien Stovall 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 1 singles to lead UC Irvine (5-10) in the first round of the New Mexico tournament at Albuquerque. Yoshimoto teamed with Kelly Goldsborough to defeat Chrissy Edwards and Jennifer Alaniz, 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 1 doubles.
