Three-time winner Susan Butcher was among 70 dog teams and mushers who started the Iditarod Trail sled dog race, a 1,160-mile, two-week chase across Alaska from Anchorage to Nome.
The heaviest snow in a quarter-century has mushers concerned about attacks from moose unable to find food. Several mushers reported moose attacks on their teams during training and many are packing rifles for protection.
