A young man was shot and killed by three suspected gang members during a party at a Garden Grove ballroom dance studio Sunday night, authorities said.

The suspects were still at large today.

Ha Dang, 22, was shot at least once while he was in the restroom of Jimmy’s Ballroom Dance Studio after an altercation with three men believed to be members of a local gang, Garden Grove Police Lt. John Woods said.

Woods said that Dang, whose city of residence was not immediately known, went to the studio last night about 6 p.m.

About 8 p.m. Dang’s friends became concerned when he had not returned from the restroom after several minutes, Woods said.

“His friends went to check on him and saw three people leaving the restroom. When they went in, they found he had been shot at least once,” Woods said.

“Robbery does not appear to be a motive,” the lieutenant said. “There apparently was some sort of altercation in the restroom.”

Jimmy Nguyen, the owner of the studio at 10931 Westminster Ave., said: “Somebody was shot, I heard some screams and saw people run out the door.”

Nguyen said he was having a party for about 60 of his students and friends at the time of the shooting.

“I don’t know what happened. I don’t know who shot him. . . . We’re very upset about this,” Nguyen said. He said Dang was not one of his dance students.

Police said Dang was not a gang member.
