Josephine Johnson; Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author

Josephine Johnson, 79, who won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1934 for her first novel, “Now in November,” written when she was 24. She wrote 11 books, including novels, short stories and poetry. One of her most popular books was the 1969 “Inland Island,” written in diary format about a year spent on her 37-acre property. Critics acclaimed it as a modern version of Henry David Thoreau’s “Walden.” She had been a regular contributor to the monthly Ohio Magazine. In Batavia, Ohio, on Feb. 27 of pneumonia.
