Mister Frisky Nominated to Try Blue Grass Stakes

Mister Frisky, unbeaten in 15 career starts, is among 157 3-year-olds nominated to Keeneland’s Grade II Blue Grass Stakes on April 14, according to the track.

The 1 1/8-mile race, a $250,000-added event, is a major prep for the Kentucky Derby, which will be run May 5 at Churchill Downs.

Among the other leading Triple Crown contenders as Blue Grass eligibles are Shot Gun Scott, Champagneforashley, Slavic, Red Ransom, Summer Squall, Silver Ending and last year’s 2-year-old champion, Rhythm.

Mister Frisky scored a 2 1/2-length victory in the $136,550 San Rafael Stakes, a Grade II race, in his last start at Santa Anita. He is owned by Josean Fernandez and trained by Laz Barrera.

Mister Frisky made his first 13 starts in Puerto Rico, where he was Horse of the Year in 1989.

Shot Gun Scott defeated highly regarded 3-year-olds Slavic, Rhythm and Yonder in the Grade II Fountain of Youth Stakes. He also scored victories in the In Reality and Affirmed division of the Florida Stallion Stakes as a 2-year-old.

Shot Gun Scott is owned by Scott Hamilton and Jean Friedberg.

Summer Squall and Champagneforashley are also undefeated colts. They have not started as 3-year-olds.

Summer Squall has five victories, including the Grade I Hopeful Stakes, and Champagneforashley has won three starts by a total of 30 1/2 lengths.

Ron McAnally and Angelo Constanza’s Silver Ending won the El Camino Real Derby at Bay Meadows and Rokeby Stable’s Red Ransom ran second in a Gulfstream Park allowance race after winning his first two career starts.

Other prominent nominees to the Blue Grass include Adjudicating, Drag Race, Magical Mile, Music Prospector, Roanoke, Senor Pete and Tsu’s Dawning.
