SANTA ANITA : Brown Bess Warms Up for ’90 Bow in Santa Ana Handicap
Eclipse Award-winner Brown Bess jogged on Santa Anita’s main track Wednesday in preparation for her 1990 bow in the $150,000-added Grade I Santa Ana Handicap for fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles on the grass Sunday at Santa Anita.
“She got here about 6 last night,” trainer Dean Greenman said Wednesday. “She just jogged today. She’ll gallop up to the race.’
The 8-year-old mare was accompanied on her trip from Northern California by exercise rider Victor Trujillo. Owned by Suzanne Pashayan’s Calbourne Farm of Fresno, Brown Bess has won 15 of 30 starts and earned $1,057,670. In her last start in November, she won the Yellow Ribbon Stakes at the Oak Tree meet to clinch the Eclipse.
Horse of the Year Sunday Silence jogged around the training track Wednesday at Santa Anita for the third straight morning since resuming light training.
Sunday Silence, who had been walking in the barn under tack since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery Nov. 16, is being pointed toward a return to the races early this summer at Hollywood Park.
