NHL ROUNDUP : Sabres Slice Up Bruin Defense in 10-4 Victory

Alexander Mogilny and Dave Snuggerud scored two goals each as the Buffalo Sabres won the battle of the NHL’s two top teams with a 10-4 rout of the Boston Bruins Thursday night at Boston.

The Sabres moved to within five points of Boston in the Adams Division standings.

The Sabres, 2-0-2 in their past four games, built a 4-0 lead after one period on two goals by Mogilny and one each from Dave Andreychuk and Darrin Shannon.

They built the lead to 7-0 at 10:10 of the second period on goals by Phil Housley, Pierre Turgeon and Snuggerud.

Cam Neely scored his 48th goal for Boston.

New York Rangers 7, Philadelphia 5--Newly acquired Mike Gartner scored two goals, including one during a four-goal burst in 6:06 of the second period, to lead the Rangers at Philadelphia.

The Patrick Division-leading Rangers increased their margin over Pittsburgh to eight points.

Detroit 3, St. Louis 2--Steve Yzerman tied for the NHL lead with his sixth short-handed goal of the season to lead the Red Wings at Detroit.

New Jersey 4, New York Islanders 2--Patrik Sundstrom and John MacLean scored 55 seconds apart late in the first period to lead the Devils at East Rutherford, N. J.

Toronto 7, Hartford 6--Gary Leeman notched his fourth career hat trick and Ed Olczyk added his 28th goal and three assists to lead the Maple Leafs at Hartford, Conn.
