THE SIDELINES : Emirates Soccer Coach Resigns

From Times Wire Services

The United Arab Emirates soccer team, one of the finalists for the World Cup, today announced the resignation of national Coach Bernard Blaut.

Blaut, appointed in January after Brazilian Mario Zagalo was fired, resigned because of his handling of the team at the 10th Gulf Cup competition, in which the team finished last.

The UAE, which qualified for the World Cup finals for the first time, finished behind Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and Iraq in the Gulf tournament, which ended last Friday.
