British Group Wins Awards

The British group Soul II Soul, snubbed in last month’s American Music Awards, were among the big winners Wednesday night at the fourth annual Soul Train Music Awards.

The band, whose four nominations were the most of any act, was named the best rhythm-and-blues group and won the best R&B; single award for “Keep On Movin’.”

The group received the most American Music Awards nominations but was shut out.

The music video for Janet Jackson’s title track from her album “Rhythm Nation 1814” won best R&B; video honors.

Producer Quincy Jones received the Heritage Award, given for outstanding career achievement. Jones has been instrumental in the success of several major pop stars, including Michael Jackson. He also received best jazz album honors for “Back on the Block,” whose songs span the broad spectrum of African-American music.

“Big Tyme,” the second album by Heavy D & the Boyz, was named the year’s best rap album.

Talk show host Arsenio Hall won the Sammy Davis Jr. Award, presented to the entertainer of the year.

The awards are an offshoot of “Soul Train,” the popular 20-year-old black dance show.
