NEWPORT BEACH : All Schools to Have Computers in 2 Years
The Newport-Mesa Unified School District has begun a two-year program to bring computer training to all schools.
A $1.8-million budget was unanimously approved for the 1990-91 school year for more than 300 new computers and staff training. After that, another $600,000 will be needed through 1994, with $100,000 of that going toward repair and replacement each year, according to a report by the schools superintendent.
The goal is to have one lab for each elementary school and two for each middle school and high school. Each lab would have at least 18 computers. Assistant Supt. Carol Burge said she hopes that “all the computers will be installed and working by the end of this school year.”
Money for the project will be borrowed from a reserve fund and be paid back by 1994.
Newport-Mesa schools entered into the computer era six years ago with the purchase of 90 used personal computers. Today, the district has more 1,000 computers in classrooms and computer labs.
