Chargers Sign Former Bills Punter Kidd

In an effort to shore up their punting game, the Chargers signed former Buffalo Bills punter John Kidd Wednesday, bringing the total of Plan B free agents signed by the team to five.

Kidd, 28, punted the past six seasons in Buffalo after being selected in the fifth round of the 1984 draft out of Northwestern. He has a career average of 40.5 yards and owns the NFL record of 33 punts inside the 20-yard line, set in 1985.

BASEBALL

University of San Diego Coach John Cunningham will be inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Assn.’s Hall of Fame next January, the ABCA announced.

Cunningham was one of six coaches elected this year for the ABCA’s highest honor. They will join 137 other amateur coaches in the hall. Now in his 27th year at USD, Cunningham has compiled a 610-610-14 record. Fourteen of his team’s have had winning records, and nine of his players have been All-Americans.

A graduate of St. Augustine High and the University of San Francisco, Cunningham played both baseball and basketball and was named USF’s athlete of the year as a senior. He took over the Torero baseball program in 1962 and has also served as basketball coach, athletic director and bus driver at USD.
