Share

The New York Rangers moved a step closer to their first division title Wednesday night at Toronto, but their 8-2 victory was a costly one.

Brian Leetch, their best defenseman, broke his left ankle in the first period when he crashed into the boards. He will be out the rest of the season.

John Ogrodnick had two goals and an assist to pace the Rangers, who lead the Patrick Division by eight points with eight games to play.

The Rangers have finished first three times, but never since division play began in 1967-68. The last time was in 1941-42.

In their last eight games, the Rangers play one team with a winning record--Toronto--and that game is at New York. They have one game left against the second-place New Jersey Devils.

Edmonton 3, Montreal 3--The Oilers spotted the Canadiens two early goals at Montreal, then stormed back to get the tie.

A power-play goal by Glenn Anderson eight minutes into the final period gave the Oilers the tie. The Oilers outshot the Canadiens, 42-25.
