Soucie Shoots Christian Heritage Over Bethel, Into Final

Christian Heritage put five players in double figures in defeating Bethel, Ind., 95-90 in Chattanooga, Tenn. on Friday. So what’s new?

Well, the victory puts the Hawks in the final of the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Assn. championships today against Cederville, Ohio, which upset tournament host Tennessee Temple, 79-76 in Friday’s other semifinal.

Brad Soucie led Christian Heritage with 30 points. He made seven three-pointers and also grabbed eight rebounds.

Mark Kraatz finished with 21 points and 11 assists.

FOOTBALL

The Chargers announced their preseason schedule and for the second consecutive year will play only two home exhibition games. In past years they played three of four at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.

The preseason schedule begins Saturday, Aug. 11 at home against the Dallas Cowboys. On Aug. 18, the Chargers will play the Rams in Anaheim and then return home for an Aug. 25 game against the 49ers. All games will begin at 7 p.m.

The Chargers’ final exhibition game will be against the Raiders--date, time and site to be announced.

BASEBALL

In Jim Dietz’s first game back coaching, his Aztecs came up with a 15-5 victory over host Sacramento State.

It wasn’t so much Dietz’s return that gave the Aztecs a boost as it was 11 Sacramento State errors. Twice Sacramento State committed two errors on one play. Dietz, who had suffered chest pains recently, had taken a week off on advice from a doctor.

Pitcher Erik Platenburg picked up the victory to improve to 3-2. He struck out seven and gave up two earned runs and three hits in seven innings.

Offensively, Anthony Johnson was two for three with a double and a triple. He scored three runs and drove in another. Jeff Barry was two for three with two RBIs.

SDSU improved to 15-8, Sacramento State fell to 15-7.

VOLLEYBALL

No. 2 UCLA got by No. 7 San Diego State, 15-7, 15-6, 11-15, 15-5, at Peterson gym. UCLA had four players with 13 or more kills. Doug Moreland led San Diego State with 14 kills.

UCLA improved to 18-2, 12-2 in the WIVA, and SDSU fell to 14-10, 3-8.

BODYSURFING

Some of the best bodysurfers on the West Coast will compete today and Sunday in the Pro-Am III of Pacific Beach to be held just south of Crystal Pier. Competition begins both days at 8 a.m.

Mike Cunningham and T.J. McIver will be back to defend their pro and amateur 1989 titles.

MEN’S TENNIS

USD won its opening-round match in the USD Invitational with a 9-0 shutout of Northern Arizona. It was the 10th consecutive victory for USD (12-2).

For USD, Jose Luis Noriega defeated Mike Tebbutt, 6-1, 6-1, and Chris Toomey got by Matt Meister, 6-2, 6-3.

Northern Arizona fell to 10-8. USD will play Iowa (a 5-4 winner over Dartmouth) in the second round at 2 p.m. today on the west courts at USD. Tournament play begins at 8 a.m.

SOFTBALL

Dina Tarr came through with a two-out infield single in the bottom of the eighth inning to score Angie Straub from third and give USD a 2-1 victory over visiting St. Mary’s and a split of their double-header.

The Toreros (10-6) turned four double plays in the second game.

In the first one, St. Mary’s (6-16) shut out USD, 2-0.
