An Oceanside man swerving to miss a car that cut in front of him Saturday night rammed the back of a California Highway Patrol car parked on the side of Interstate 5 near the Camino de Estrella exit in San Clemente.

CHP Sgt. William Kelly said both the officer and the driver were taken to a local hospital, but neither was seriously injured and would probably be released.

Kelly said the unidentified officer was stopped by the side of the road doing paper work when he was struck from behind.

The driver, Ronald W. Radkovich, 45, said he was on his way home to Oceanside at 8:30 p.m. when he tried to evade a car that swerved into a lane in front of him.

“I tried to get away from the other car. . . ,” Radkovich said. “I hit my brakes, and I didn’t see the (CHP car).”

Radkovich’s Cadillac was a total wreck and the rear of the CHP car was destroyed, Kelly said.
