THE SIDELINES : Jean Fleurian Upsets Becker
Jean Fleurian of France overcame three set points in the first set and upset second-ranked Boris Becker 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 today in the third round of the International Players Championships.
Fleurian trailed 3-1 in the first set when the match was suspended Monday because of rain. The Frenchman, seeded 32nd and ranked 46th, faced three set points when trailing 5-3 but overcame them to win the game.
He broke Becker’s serve to tie the set 5-5, forced a tiebreaker and scored the final four points in the tiebreaker. Fleurian then dominated the second set to win in 91 minutes. Fleurian had 33 winners to only 15 for Becker.
