Only Four Angel Games Scheduled in Palm Springs : Spring training: Team will play Padres there on April 2-5. Freeway Series follows, with April 6 game in Anaheim Stadium.

Because their opponents refused to waste time on travel during this lockout-shortened spring training, the Angels will play only four exhibition games in Palm Springs.

The Angels will open their exhibition season with a four-game series March 26-29 in Yuma, Ariz., against the Padres. They’ll return to Mesa to play the Cubs on March 30, then play the Indians in Tucson March 31 and the Brewers in Chandler April 1.

The Angels then will travel to Palm Springs for games against the Padres April 2-5.

The Angels will finish their exhibition schedule with the Freeway Series April 6-8 against the Dodgers. The April 6 game will be at Anaheim Stadium; the April 7-8 games are at Dodger Stadium.

“It’s satisfactory enough,” Angel General Manager Mike Port said of the revised schedule, which was formulated in New York by officials of Major League Baseball. “We’ll spend time on the road but at least we’ll get some games in.”

The Angels were scheduled to begin the 12-game Palm Springs portion of their spring training schedule last Saturday. A spokesman for the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce said the city was happy to have the Angels, even though they will play eight fewer games than originally scheduled.

“I would say we’re gratified to get any portion of of spring training here in Palm Springs,” said Rolfe Arnhym, executive vice president of the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce. “The timing is academic. The important thing is that they’ll be here. That means more to us than when (they’re here).”

Unlike some towns that depend almost solely on spring training for tourist dollars, Palm Springs continues to draw tourists at a steady rate, Arnhym said.
