HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Channel Islands Smothers Newbury Park

Angel Aragon struck out eight and limited Newbury Park High to two hits Wednesday to lead Channel Islands to a 10-0 Marmonte League baseball victory at Channel Islands.

Aragon (2-1), a right-handed sophomore, held the Panthers hitless through 6 1/3 innings before surrendering consecutive singles. Several professional scouts interested in Channel Islands’ Jacob Cruz were at the game, according to Coach Don Cardinal, but Aragon put on his own show.

“I told the guys that this is a good opportunity for you to show your stuff and, boy, he did,” Cardinal said of Aragon. “He blew them away.”

Cruz, who has been battling bronchitis for the past two weeks, had two hits to raise his average to .628.

Channel Islands’ George Alvarado had three hits and Jose Gastelum had two, including a three-run home run in the first inning, and five runs batted in.

Channel Islands (7-3, 1-1 in league play) entered the game batting .373. Newbury Park dropped to 5-4-1, 0-1.

In other baseball games:

Westlake 6, Royal 5 (nine innings)--Tim Falsken pitched 3 2/3 shutout innings in relief and scored the winning run in the ninth to keep Westlake (8-0, 2-0) unbeaten in Marmonte League play. Falsken (4-0) allowed only one hit and no walks in relief of starter James Clark.

Falsken, who was one for four with an RBI, reached first on an error in the ninth, stole second and scored on Mike Lieberthal’s double. Westlake’s Rob Neal had two hits and two RBIs. It was the second extra-inning league loss for Royal (4-3, 0-2).

North Hollywood 19, Reseda 6--Erik Martinez was four for four with two runs batted in to lead North Hollywood in a Valley Pac-8 Conference rout at home.

Duane Braxton (two for three, home run) and Harry Marks (three for four, home run) led a North Hollywood offense that scored in every inning. Sammy Ciaramilaro (2-1) picked up the win for North Hollywood (3-2, 3-2). Joe Tushnet had two hits for Reseda (2-3, 2-3).

Poly 10, Van Nuys 2--Senior right-hander Eddie Castellanos became the first pitcher in the region to win five games in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Van Nuys.

Castellanos (5-0) struck out seven, walked three, allowed one earned run and contributed two hits. Rodrigo Dorame and Marlon McKinney were both three for three and Steve Chavez and added two hits for Poly (7-2, 5-0). Van Nuys is 0-5, 0-5.

Monroe 9, Grant 6--Grant pitchers walked 11 batters as Monroe jumped to a 9-0 lead in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Grant.

With three runs in and the bases loaded, Grant had the go-ahead run at the plate in the bottom of the sixth, but senior left-hander Sean Henson recorded the third out and pitched a scoreless seventh to earn a save.

Francisco Espinosa was two for three with three RBIs for Monroe (3-2, 3-2) and teammate Christian Ascencio was two for four. Shortstop Jim Tumbeiro had two hits for Grant (3-6, 2-3).

Crossroads 12, Harvard 8--Crossroads batted around in a nine-run first inning and went through eight batters in the nonleague game before the host Saracens recorded an out.

Jono Pivo had three hits, and Bobby Mason and John Rath each had two for Harvard (4-7).

SOFTBALL

Chaminade 2, Calabasas 0 (eight innings)--Kathy Regan (8-1) pitched a one-hitter and struck out 17 for Chaminade in the nonleague game at Calabasas.

GOLF

Simi Valley 417, Chaminade 423--Chaminade junior Tim Powers fired a school-record, four-under 67 in the nonleague match at Simi Hills Golf Course.

Powers had four consecutive birdies on the back nine en route to a four-under 32.

BOYS’ TRACK

Agoura 99, Nordhoff 36--Five Agoura athletes, led by Bryan Dameworth, won two events each in the Frontier League meet at Nordhoff.

Dameworth, the Kinney national cross-country champion, won the mile in 4 minutes 36 seconds and the two mile in 9:33.8.

Teammate Dan Zorich was a double winner in the shotput (45 feet 4 inches) and discus (school record of 148-1).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Harvard d. Bell-Jeff, 15-4, 15-2, 15-0--Rick Osterloh played middle blocker for the first time this season, taking over for injured teammate Matt Clark, and had 14 kills to lead the Saracens in a San Fernando Valley League match at Bell-Jeff.

Granada Hills d. El Camino Real, 15-5, 15-10, 10-15, 15-3--Danny Asaoka had 14 kills to pace the Highlanders (5-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference opener at Granada Hills.

Notre Dame d. Antelope Valley, 15-5, 15-7, 15-4--Steve Smith had 10 kills and Rick Sliter added eight blocks to lead visiting Notre Dame (6-2) to a nonleague win.
