COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UCI Rallies to Defeat Long Beach in Volleyball

After losing its first two games, UC Irvine’s men’s volleyball team, ranked 15th in the nation, rallied to defeated No. 3 Cal State Long Beach, 7-15, 4-15, 15-13, 15-6, 15-13, in a nonconference match Wednesday at Long Beach.

Steve Florentine led the Anteaters (6-11) with 17 kills and Scott Reckner and David Dettker each had 14. Long Beach dropped to 17-5.

In nonconference baseball:

Chapman 8, Cal Lutheran 1--Host Chapman (14-12) was led by Steve Halweg (1-0) who had a five-hitter and five strikeouts for the complete-game victory. Mike Giuseffi had two hits and two runs batted in. Chapman’s Doug Yates homered in the third and Rod Klopfer had two hits and an RBI.

Christ College Irvine 12, Northwestern Nazarene 5--Lou Simon had three hits and had two RBIs and Armando Olivarez had three hits, a two RBI double in the fourth inning and scored twice to lead Christ College Irvine (11-13).

In the Cal State Fullerton softball tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 8, Rutgers 0--Ann Van Dortrecht pitched four innings and Tracy Tousley pitched one to combine for a perfect game to lead top-ranked Cal State Fullerton (20-8) in a game shortened by the tournament-imposed mercy rule. Van Dortrecht had eight strikeouts.

In nonconference baseball:

Southern California Christian 11, Biola 3--Joe Aversa was three for four with three runs, two RBIs and four stolen bases for host SCC (14-10). Paul Plyler (2-1) pitched six innings and was three for five with two solo home runs.

In women’s nonconference tennis:

Cal State Fullerton 6, Loyola Marymount 3--Freshman Tracy Spellman moved from No. 5 to No. 4 singles for the visiting Titans (9-10) and defeated Doreen Delgado, 6-1, 6-2.
