COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Heizer’s Perfect Game Helps Orange Coast Edge Saddleback

Kristin Heizer pitched a perfect game and Orange Coast College defeated Saddleback, 1-0, in an Orange Empire Conference softball game Wednesday Orange Coast.

Heizer (15-3) struck out three--all in the first inning--and only allowed two balls hit out of the infield.

The Pirates (19-5, 5-1) scored their only run in the fourth inning when Cathy Scanlan led off with a triple and scored on Heather Smith’s single. Smith also preserved the no-hitter with a sliding catch in left field in the fifth inning.

Denise Kuhns (11-7) went the distance for Saddleback (12-12, 4-2).

In other Orange Empire Conference softball game:

Cypress 1, Golden West 0 (17 innings)--Tricia Barr’s run-scoring single drove in Teresa Anderson with one out in the bottom of the 17th inning for Cypress (21-3, 3-3). Sally Dugas (10-2) went the distance, allowing five hits, one walk and striking out five for the victory. Loser Pam Fogg (9-5) also went the distance and retired 39 consecutive batters in one stretch. Golden West is 21-10, 3-3.

Rancho Santiago 3, Riverside 2--Evelyn Ochotorena hit a two-run triple to give host Rancho Santiago (5-14, 2-4) a seventh-inning, come-from-behind victory.

In South Coast Conference men’s volleyball:

Orange Coast 3, Pierce 2--The Pirates won a tense, 3 1/2-hour match at Pierce, 15-12, 7-15, 15-12, 17-19, 15-7. It was Pirates’ fifth consecutive victory over Pierce, which lost to OCC in five games in the state championship match last season. Orange Coast (11-1 in the SCC) moved into sole possession of first place in the conference.

Golden West 3, College of the Canyons 0--Eric Zeno had 12 kills as Golden West (7-5) won, 15-5, 15-8, 15-9.
