NBA ROUNDUP : Thorpe, Rockets Chill Hot Pistons, 115-110

Otis Thorpe scored six points in a 17-4 run to open the fourth quarter, and the Houston Rockets snapped the Detroit Pistons’ 12-game winning streak, 115-110, Thursday night at Houston.

It was the Pistons’ second loss in two months covering 27 games, snapping the third hottest streak in NBA history. Detroit’s 12-game winning streak equaled the second best in club history.

Houston had an 84-81 lead after three quarters but bolted to a 101-85 margin with 7:45 left. Detroit pulled to within 108-104 with 1:34 left on two baskets by Vinnie Johnson but never came closer.

Akeem Olajuwon had 26 points and 10 rebounds for the Rockets, and Buck Johnson added 20 points.

Mark Aguirre scored 21 points for Detroit, and James Edwards, Bill Laimbeer and Isiah Thomas each had 18.

San Antonio 107, Portland 106--Willie Anderson made a tiebreaking free throw with 1.2 seconds left at San Antonio, and the Spurs ended a 12-game losing streak against the Trail Blazers.

Anderson missed a shot with 3.7 seconds left but was fouled by Clyde Drexler while going for the rebound. Anderson made his first foul shot and missed the second.

David Robinson made a jump shot with 1:06 left, and Anderson sank two free throws with 45 seconds remaining to tie the score, 106-106.

Robinson blocked Kevin Duckworth’s shot with 21 seconds left, and the Spurs went for one shot.

Robinson had 29 points, 19 rebounds and five blocked shots as the Spurs beat Portland for the first time since April 15, 1987. Terry Cummings added 26 points for San Antonio.

Dallas 116, Orlando 106--Rolando Blackman scored 32 points and Derek Harper added 27 as the Mavericks downed the Magic at Orlando.

The Mavericks trailed, 84-82, at the end of the third quarter before jumping to a nine-point lead with six minutes left. Blackman scored 10 points in the final quarter as Dallas pulled away.

Scott Skiles and Nick Anderson each scored 22 points for Orlando, which lost for the 17th time in the last 19 games.

Seattle 125, Denver 118--Xavier McDaniel returned to the starting lineup and scored eight of his 24 points in the final 2:45 as the SuperSonics won at Seattle.

McDaniel, who missed 12 games after arthroscopic knee surgery, put the SuperSonics ahead to stay, 115-114, on a basket with 2:45 remaining.
