TRACK ROUNDUP : Newport Harbor Wins Girls’ Championship

Newport Harbor High School edged Covina Western Christian, 66-64, on Saturday to win the girls’ championship of the Dana Hills Track and Field Invitational.

Susie Jacobson won the 100-meter low hurdles in 16.52 seconds for the Sailors and teammate Kim Robinson won the 1,600 in 5 minutes 30.63 seconds.

Western Christian, led by sisters Secora and Shunte Taylor with a one-two sweep in the 200, was seeking its third meet title. The Taylors also paced Western Christian to victories in the 400 and 1,600 relays.

Costa Mesa finished finished fifth (47 points) behind Ann Johnston’s victories in the 300 low hurdles (50.55) and 800 (2:26.9). Teammate Katie Jaglorski won the shot put with a throw of 39 feet 9 1/2 inches.

In the boys’ division, Chris Alexander sprinted to three victories to lead Temecula Valley to the championship.

Alexander finished first in the 300 intermediate hurdles (41.86), the 110 high hurdles (15.70) and the 100 (11.29) as Temecula Valley defeated runner-up Newport Harbor, 55-44.

Alexander was left out of the 200 final when his eighth-best time of the preliminaries left him without a lane. The track at Dana Hills has only seven lanes on its curves.

Orange Lutheran finished fourth in the boys’ division on the strength of a victory in the 400 relay (46.97).

Meet records were established by Brethren’s Chiron Hart in the long jump (21-6) and Temecula Valley’s Kim Gusky in the girls’ discus (110-7).
