A bank robber got a jolt for his trouble Tuesday after presenting a teller with a demand note and walking out with $580 and a “dye pack.”

The dye pack, hidden among the bills, exploded and showered the man with tear gas and red dye as he walked out of the Great American Bank in 16900 block of Bernardo Center Drive in Rancho Bernardo, said Police Department spokesman Bill Robinson. The man fled, but all but $20 was recovered.

Police believe the man also robbed Great American’s Scripps Ranch branch of more than $1,600 on March 21. The man is described as white, with stringy blond hair. Robinson said he has a pockmarked and acne-ridden complexion. He is about 5-foot-8 and weighs about 140 pounds.
